Which health insurance companies allow you to claim gyms?
Many health insurance companies allow you to claim gym memberships in order to rehab an injury or support a specific condition. Check with your specific provider as every individual is different.

Bupa Gym Health Insurance
We’re recognised by Bupa as a healthcare provider. Bupa allows patients to claim gym membership costs if it’s necessary to treat a specific medical condition. Conditions that may qualify include arthritis, asthma, diabetes, hypertension, obesity, or osteoporosis.
Tax Deductible Gym Membership
Gym membership costs are generally not tax deductible. However, if your job requires a high level of fitness it could be tax deductible. Jobs that would require a high level of fitness might include, professional athletes, dancers, certain armed forces members, personal trainers, fitness instructors, law enforcement officers, firefighters, aviation professionals, construction workers, and maritime workers.

Here are some steps to take if you want to claim your gym membership on your health insurance.
- Check your policy and see if it includes gym rebates.
- Call up and ask whether you have cover for gym membership deductions.
- Get a referral: A health professional, like your GP or physio, needs to refer you to a gym membership.
- Choose a gym that is on your insurer’s list of approved providers.
- Keep receipts: Keep all documentation from your gym membership payments.
- Fill out a claim form: You’ll need to file a claim form and submit it to your health insurer.
- Get reimbursed: Once your claim is approved, your insurer will reimburse you as per your policy.
What form do I need to fill in to claim my gym on health insurance?
There could be many names for this form depending on your insurance company, but usually the form will be called a Health management and PT medical form, Health improvement benefit approval form (AHM), or Exercise and gym benefits authorisation and claim (HCF).
The form needs to be signed by a health professional, such as your GP, physio, occupational therapist, exercise physiologist, dietician, chiropractor, osteopath, psychologist, or diabetes educator.
